Why Nipple Reduction
Nipples play a vital part in our life and are considered as one of the main body-part related with our married life. However some women suffer with enlarged or asymmetrical nipples that creates discomfort and also creates problem in wearing clothes as they tends to peek out.
A nipple reduction or nipple correction surgery is a relatively simple procedure.
Surgical Reduction of the Nipple
Your doctor will check your nipples to decide which part of the nipple needs to be reduced. It will depend on the shape of the nipple. The needed reduction could be in length or in width or in both.
Nipple reduction surgeries are typically done with local anesthesia and takes about one hour of surgery. However, if they are combined with other breast-enhancing surgeries, like breast lift or breast augmentation, other types of anesthesia may be used depending on the length of surgery.
You can usually return to work the day after nipple reduction surgery.
Length Reduction
If nipples that are too long and / or project too far out can be shortened. In such surgery the skin along the neck of the nipple will be removed and the tip of the nipple is then sutured to the bottom of the nipple. So nipple length is shortened to the desire.
Width Reduction
If the nipple is too wide or thick and not too long then a pie-shaped wedge will be removed from the undersurface of the nipple. So the nipple is taken in or shrunk and the circumference of nipple is reduced. In such surgery dissolving sutures are used.
Length and Width Reduction
For some people the nipple may be too wide and too long. In those cases, both procedures are performed.
Recovery
Recovery time will depend on the patient, but most patients can resume their normal activity within a day or two. Patients can shower the day after surgery. Dissolving sutures are used.
This treatment does not usually affect the ability to breastfeed. Some women are unable to breastfeed even without surgery.
