Famous Mini Skirt of Datang Miao Village in China
Datang Short Skirt Miao Village is located about 15 kilometres from
Leishan village. It is well known because of the distinctive style of
dress worn by Miao females in the village.
Size
The Miao women of Datang Miao village are also known for their
tradition of wearing miniskirts. Specially in their traditional dance
and in their daily life too. The Miao miniskirt, measures 15 to 16
centimeters in length, made by 7 meters of local cloth mainly hand
knitted cloth. In some instance skirt length may vary from 20
centimetres for married women to a hot 10 centimetres for young girls.
Almost all the girls and women in Datang Miao Village wear such
short skirts. Amazing fact is that they wear it all round the year even
in cold season.
Top
Their top is distinct and colorful for both casual and holiday wear.
It has a tunic top decorated with silver ornaments and gorgeously
hand-embroidered designs mainly of the dragon, phoenix, fish, bird, and
beast.
The sight of "miniskirts" is not unusual and erotic for people from
west world but for the people from some conservative societies and
countries, it may take some time to get used to as it does nto stand in
line with instream Chinese practice of modesty.
History
During the Ming dynasty, females were highly expected to cover their
bodies completely. Nothing was supposed to be exposed. The Miao females
of Datang Village, in contrast to Chinese ethnic group and in contrast
to their own Miao ethnic minority, started to wear the "miniskirt".
Soon such miniskirts become famous and are famous till date. The reason or reasons why Miao females started to wear such mini skirts is still unknown. However it is guessed that it was an act of defiance against Ming Dynasty "Victorianism". Maybe they women wear this mini skirt to provide work facilitate in paddy field.
