Mesothelioma
Mesothelioma is a rare type of cancer of the mesothelium. The mesothelium is the membrane covering and protecting most of the internal organs of the body. It has two layers of cells, One surrounding the organ and other forming a sac around it. There is a lubricating fluid between these two layers.
So in a Mesothelioma, cells of the mesothelium become abnormal and divide uncontrolled. Further they can damage nearby tissues and organs. There are three recognized types of mesothelioma. Pleural mesothelioma, Peritoneal mesothelioma and Pericardial mesothelioma.
Asbestos - Main Cause
It is said there is only recognised cause of mesothelioma is Working or esposure with asbestos. About 70 to 80 percent cases were found to be caused by asbestos. However, mesothelioma was also observed in some patients without any known exposure to asbestos.
